What is PET strapping?
PET strapping is packaging band made from polyethylene terephthalate, a polyester. In industrial purchasing, PET strapping and polyester strapping generally describe the same material family. The material name alone does not identify a complete product: dimensions, mechanical properties, finish and coil configuration still need to be specified.
Start with the package rather than a coil photograph. A compressed fiber bale, a rigid bundle and a pallet of cartons present different contact surfaces and movement during handling. Describe what the strap must contain, how the package changes after tensioning and what equipment applies the joint. Those answers make a quotation useful.
The six details that make a specification
| Detail | What to put in the enquiry |
|---|---|
| Width and thickness | Nominal dimensions, units and permitted tolerances |
| Breaking load | Required minimum, test method and reporting basis |
| Elongation | Requirement and measurement conditions |
| Linear weight | Measured grams per meter, with an agreed sampling method |
| Equipment | Machine or tool model, sealing method and approved operating window |
| Coil format | Dispenser interface, winding and required usable length |
Keep width, thickness and linear weight together. Embossed and smooth surfaces can make a thickness comparison misleading unless the measurement method is agreed. A specification should give production and receiving teams enough information to check the same product consistently.
Compare useful meters, not just kilograms
Weight per meter connects purchasing quantity to available strap length. Divide net strap mass in grams by grams per meter to estimate meters. For example, an illustrative 20 kg of strap at 10 g/m gives 2,000 m. This excludes the core and packaging; it is an arithmetic example, not a Newton product specification.
For a cost comparison, divide the delivered coil price by its usable meters, then include actual strap consumption per accepted package. Offcuts, re-strapping, joints and downtime can change the result. A lighter strap creates value only when it also meets the agreed packaging and equipment requirements. Review Newton’s Eco comparison alongside the complete application brief.
Match the strap to the complete process
A material data sheet cannot establish feed reliability or joint quality on its own. Confirm the equipment’s permitted material, width and thickness, then test the proposed coil on the actual line. Record the machine settings, joint appearance and measured joint performance so another shift can repeat the trial.
Use the real package and handling route for the next review. Observe strap position and package condition immediately after application, after the normal storage interval and after representative handling. Select a suitable transport test with the responsible packaging team; a short shop-floor run and a distribution test answer different questions.
Prepare a clear Newton enquiry
Send Newton the package type, dimensions, mass, photographs of the contact points and your current strap specification. Add the equipment model, present failure or purchasing problem, annual demand estimate and delivery destination. If you are changing materials, include the baseline acceptance criteria as well as the desired improvement.
Ask for a proposed specification and a sample-review plan before approving a supply change. Keep the final agreed dimensions, test evidence and supply format with the order. That record helps connect the buyer’s target with the operator’s setup and the receiving team’s checks.
