PET vs Steel Strapping: A Practical Conversion Checklist

PET can be evaluated for selected industrial packaging applications; steel may remain appropriate where temperature, sharp contact points or loading conditions exclude the proposed PET grade. Validate the complete package and joint before changing materials. There is no universal one-for-one replacement based only on nominal breaking load.

Direct answer: conversion depends on the application

PET can be evaluated for selected industrial packaging applications; steel may remain appropriate where temperature, sharp contact points or loading conditions exclude the proposed PET grade. Validate the complete package and joint before changing materials. There is no universal one-for-one replacement based only on nominal breaking load.

Treat conversion as a packaging project

PET versus steel strapping is a system comparison. A proposed conversion changes the material, usually the joint-making process and potentially the way the band responds to package movement. Compare the finished package under its intended conditions rather than choosing a polyester grade solely from a steel strap’s breaking-load number.

Industrial suppliers offer polyester alternatives for selected steel-strapping applications. That is a reason to investigate the opportunity, not approval for a particular load. Define the current steel package’s function, known limits and acceptance criteria before testing a substitute.

Screen the application before selecting dimensions

Application questionWhy it matters
Is the product hot when banded? The actual temperature must be inside the candidate material’s approved limits
Where are sharp edges or abrasive surfaces?Contact and protection can control failure before straight-pull strength does
Does the load shrink, settle or rebound? The strap and package must be evaluated through that change
Which joint and equipment will be used? The applied joint needs its own evidence
Is steel required by a customer specification?A material change needs the relevant approval

If a condition falls outside the proposed product’s validated window, retain the existing approved system while the packaging team reviews alternatives.

Separate potential benefits from proven results

Polyester may offer handling and material-productivity advantages in a qualified application. However, claims about fewer injuries, less damage, reduced waste or lower cost need their own evidence. Do not transfer another manufacturer’s percentage savings or product claims to a Newton grade.

Compare the full operation: coil handling, dispensing, applying and removing bands, collection after use and the resulting package condition. Follow workplace procedures and equipment instructions for both materials. Record actual changes in time, waste and rejected packages instead of assuming every potential advantage occurs together.

Validate the package and the joint

Select a candidate grade with the supplier and confirm equipment requirements with the tool or machine provider. Check the made joint, the strap route and any edge protection on the actual load. Keep settings and sample identification with the test record so the result can be reproduced.

Review the package after the expected storage interval and representative handling. Choose suitable transport testing where needed. Package containment is also separate from vehicle cargo securement: a successful material conversion does not by itself establish that a shipping arrangement meets transport rules.

Build a fair cost comparison

Compare delivered material cost per accepted package using measured consumption. Include overlap, waste and any change in rework. If two qualified products differ in linear weight, calculate usable meters from net strap mass divided by grams per meter; do not compare gross coil weights that include different packaging.

Send Newton the current steel dimensions, joint method, package photographs, load conditions and trial objectives. Add any mandatory customer requirements and the available PET equipment. The result should be a proposed specification and an approval plan, with a documented reason to proceed or keep steel for the application.

Separate material claims from package approval

Signode’s Tenax page describes its polyester strap for medium- to heavy-duty unitizing and palletizing. This is manufacturer background, not evidence that a Newton grade has the same performance or is approved for a particular steel coil.

Ask for the proposed Newton grade’s data, actual contact conditions, temperature limits, joint results and package trial. NEEDS BUSINESS VERIFICATION: no Newton conversion case or quantified steel-replacement saving is presented here as verified.

Conversion decision record

  1. Document the existing steel package and its acceptance criteria.
  2. Identify conditions that could exclude the candidate PET grade.
  3. Agree protection, strap placement and joint checks with the packaging team.
  4. Trial representative storage and handling conditions.
  5. Compare delivered cost per accepted package after recording waste and rework.

PET versus steel questions

Can equal breaking load prove that PET replaces steel?

No. Elongation, joint performance, contact conditions and the load’s behavior must also be considered.

Is a cost-saving percentage guaranteed?

No. Use the approved grade, usable length, consumption, waste and delivered price from your own operation.
