PET Strapping by Breaking Force
Breaking force is specimen failure force under stated test conditions. It is not a package safe working load, a lifting rating or a direct limit on pallet weight. Compare minimum with minimum under equivalent methods, and distinguish force in N or lbf from stress in MPa. A joint and a finished package require separate evaluation.
Search descriptions such as 1/2 × 500, 700 or 820 lb break, 3/8 × 470 lb break, and 5/8 × 950, 1250, 1400 or 1600 lb break describe buyer queries, not verified Newton grades. Here “lb break” means pound-force at failure, rather than pounds of cargo. Newton availability for any of these combinations: Please confirm this grade-specific value or option with Newton.
PET Strapping by Core Size
In a 16 × 6 core or 16 × 3 core purchasing description, suppliers commonly use the first number for the nominal inside diameter and the second for the nominal core width, in inches. Confirm that convention and the actual dimensions on a drawing; an abbreviated label is not a complete dispenser specification.
Check core ID, core width, coil outside diameter, total coil weight, winding layout and unwind direction against the dispenser. A coil can have the right core diameter and still exceed the allowable width or mass. Other Newton core sizes and the available 16 × 6 or 16 × 3 formats: Please confirm this grade-specific value or option with Newton.
How to Choose a PET Strapping Size
- Record the existing label and actual width, thickness, surface and g/m; note how each was measured.
- Check the tool or machine operating window, including material, tolerances and joint process.
- Describe the load, compression or settlement, contact edges and handling route.
- Compare minimum breaking force using the same test basis; do not infer package capacity from it.
- Compare working elongation, recovery, elongation at break and made-joint performance as separate characteristics.
- Confirm coil/core dimensions, usable length, mass and dispenser fit.
- Validate the proposed grade on the actual machine and representative load before a production change.
Check the approved dimensional window using the equipment brief in PET strapping tools.

Why Two PET Straps With the Same Nominal Size Can Behave Differently
Nominal dimensions do not describe local variation or effective cross-section. Embossed peak caliper can differ from equivalent solid thickness. Compare dimensional limits, measurement methods and g/m together; an average can conceal a local thin section.
Orientation, polymer condition and defects influence mechanical behavior. Elongation and recovery affect load movement, while surface, camber, curl and coil build affect handling and feeding. Joint conditions introduce another variable: a sound straight specimen does not establish a sound weld. Request the full specification and compare results on the intended equipment.
FAQs
What PET strapping sizes are available?
PET strapping is sold in different metric dimensions and nominal inch families; the available range depends on the supplier and grade. Newton’s released width, thickness, breaking-force and coil/core ranges need written confirmation. Send the current label and equipment requirements rather than treating this directory’s purchasing-family guides as a stock list or a promise of every combination.
What does 5/8 inch PET strapping mean?
A 5/8 inch designation names a nominal width family; the exact unit conversion is 15.875 mm. A commercially labeled 15.5 mm or 16 mm strap is not automatically interchangeable with it. Compare actual width, permitted variation, thickness and surface against the tool’s approved operating window, and retain one controlling specification in the purchase order.
What does 1400 lb break mean?
A 1400 lb break description normally refers to a specimen breaking-force classification in pound-force, subject to the supplier’s stated minimum or average and test method. It does not mean the strap can safely secure or lift a 1400 lb load. Confirm joint performance and validate the complete package separately; Newton availability for that class requires confirmation.
How do I choose core size?
Choose a core that fits the actual dispenser’s documented interface. Confirm inside diameter, core width, coil outside diameter, coil mass and unwind direction, rather than only an abbreviated size name. Provide the machine/dispenser model or drawing and review the proposed supply format with the equipment provider before accepting a new coil configuration.
Can two straps with the same width be interchangeable?
The same nominal width does not establish interchangeability. Thickness limits, stiffness, curvature, surface, g/m, elongation and joint behavior may differ, as can coil format. Check the written specifications and actual dimensions first, then run a controlled machine and package trial. A tensile result or a successful short run alone does not qualify the replacement.
Does thicker PET strapping always mean stronger strapping?
Greater thickness alone does not guarantee a higher breaking force or a better package. Polymer condition, orientation, defects and effective cross-section affect specimen performance, and embossed caliper does not directly equal solid material thickness. Even a higher breaking force may not solve feeding, welding or edge-contact problems. Compare measured force, elongation, joint results and application behavior.
Is g/m the same as coil length?
Grams per meter is mass per unit length, while coil length is the amount of usable strap supplied. Dividing defined net strap mass by representative measured g/m gives a length estimate, not an independent verification of every coil. Agree core and packaging tare, metering checks and sampling before using weight-based calculations to compare suppliers.
Prepare a Size and Specification Review
Send Newton your existing strap label, dimensions, machine model and application. Include target breaking force, elongation, surface and coil/core details, plus purchase volume and the reason for reviewing the strap. Request written grade data before ordering.
For the supplier evidence behind custom PET strapping specifications, review Newton’s manufacturer qualification guide.
