What Is Camber?
Camber is lateral curvature in the plane of the strap.
Place a length of strap flat and it may naturally bend toward one side.
Excessive camber for a particular machine can create cumulative one-sided contact through long tracks and curves.
Typical Camber Symptoms
Possible symptoms include:
- strap consistently running toward one side;
- repeated jam at the same curve;
- one-sided guide wear;
- short feeds on long tracks.
However, the same symptoms can also result from machine alignment.
Therefore fixed-direction failures should trigger both strap and machine checks.
What Is Curl?
Curl is curvature out of the plane of the strap.
The leading end may rise or fall.
This can matter at:
- narrow track entry;
- storage box;
- retraction;
- overlap;
- welding.
Residual coil set or residual stress can move the leading end outside the machine's entry window.
What Is Twist?
Twist is rotation around the strap's longitudinal axis.
It can disturb:
- track movement;
- overlap alignment;
- gripping;
- welding.
Twist should be evaluated under a defined sample length and conditioning method.
What Can Cause Geometry Variation?
Possible manufacturing contributors can include:
- asymmetric thickness;
- asymmetric cooling;
- asymmetric stretching;
- heat history;
- slitting alignment;
- winding;
- residual stress.
These are possible mechanisms, not automatic root-cause conclusions.
How Does Heat Setting Affect Geometry?
Thermal stabilization can influence residual stress and dimensional behavior.
But PET strapping heat setting is only one process stage.
Geometry can also be influenced by forming, drawing and winding.
How Does Winding Affect Curl?
A wound strap takes on a radius inside the coil.
Winding tension, core size, storage time and temperature can influence residual coil memory.
Why There Is No Universal “Perfect” Camber Number
Machines have different:
- track lengths;
- curve radii;
- entry gaps;
- speeds;
- strap windows.
A numerical geometry target should therefore be tied to a defined product, method and machine requirement.
A lot-specific QC result describes its sample, measurement method and conditions; it is not a universal product-wide guarantee.
Do not generalize one lot result to all Newton straps.
How to Diagnose a Geometry Problem
Record:
- direction of failure;
- exact jam location;
- sample position in the coil;
- strap batch;
- machine condition;
- camber measurement;
- curl measurement;
- full-track trial result.
Then compare with a known reference strap under the same machine conditions.
FAQs
Are camber and curl the same?
No. Camber is lateral in-plane curvature; curl is out-of-plane curvature.
Can camber cause machine jams?
It can contribute to one-sided tracking and cumulative friction.
Can curl cause weak welds?
Curl can interfere with flat overlap, but actual joint strength must still be tested.
Does winding cause curl?
It can contribute to coil memory.
Can a machine cause the same symptom as strap camber?
Yes.
